22/7/19 Leisurely drive 250 miles to Northumberland. Stopped at Scotch Corner Services en route, which is always a surprise to me that it’s not the border between England and Scotland! Beautiful sunny day so we had a walk around Wooler a quaint little market town, before driving past Bamburgh Castle. We then went for a walk through the sand dunes and on the beach near Seahouses with a view of the Farne Islands, beautiful and sunny, though a bit windy. After a drive through Seahouses, we checked into East Horton Farmhouse which really is a rural idyll, in the middle of no where. After tea and cakes we retired to our room to have a little rest and a glass of wine. After a freshen up we headed out to the Percy Arms for our dinner. Food was OK, but service very slow, forgot my gin and then forgot Nik’s coffee!

23/7/19 After a hearty breakfast we headed out for the day. Due to tides we couldn’t cross the causeway to Lindisfarne until 10.20, so we went to Berwick on Tweed first. The lovely walled town was a revelation, beautiful. We had a short stop at the seaside promenade at Spittal, before heading back to Lindisfarne. After parking we had some lovely home grown strawberries before strolling around the island. Very hot and sunny, got up to 28 degrees. Our original plan was to go to Bamburgh Castle, but a crash on the A1 meant traffic going South was at a standstill. We decided instead to return to Berwick and walk around the town walls, after buying Nik an essential cap! Fuelled by a beer and ice cream we made it all the way round. We then went to Seahouses for a stroll and a beer overlooking the harbour before heading back to our B & B. 20,000 steps today in the heat, we will certainly sleep well tonight. Evening meal in an Italian restaurant in Wooler, Milan. This restaurant really is a hidden gem, very stylish interior and great food. I had calzone and Nik had salmon risotto. Big thunder storm overnight.

24/7/19 Bit of culture this morning, a tour around Bamburgh Castle, which is very impressive. Another hot, sunny day so we headed to the beach at Low Newton. After a pint at The Ship we headed down the beach towards Dunstanberg Castle ruins. After a lovely stroll along the beach, we headed to Beadell Harbour for another beach stroll. For dinner we had an urge for proper fish and chips at the seaside, so drove to Seahouses. Lovely traditional fish and chips at Lewis’ (well scampi for me) with bread and butter and a can of coke!

25/7/19 Cragside today, which is close to Rothbury. National Trust property which was the home of Lord Armstrong a Victorian Engineer and inventor. Officially old, we’ve become members of the National Trust! Absolutely lovely place, the house was very interesting and the carriage drive a great way to see the grounds. Stopped in Alnwick on way back for a stroll around the market town and a cheeky beer. Alnwick Castle is where Harry Potter was filmed. Back to Milan in Wooler for dinner, as it was so good last time. Big thunder and lightening storm tonight, weather seems to be on the turn, just in time for us to leave in the morning, I would highly recommend East Horton Farmhouse, welcoming hosts, lovely breakfasts, comfortable rooms and great rural location, away from the world, but still easy driving distance from all the local attractions.
