30/5/19 - Birmingham - Kefalonia - I'd always wanted to visit Kefalonia after reading Captain Corelli's Mandolin. We only booked this week long trip a couple of weeks ago so got a great deal. Flight was just over 3 hours from Birmingham. Kefalonia airport is tiny, but being expanded. The journey to our apartment took around an hour through beautiful scenery and very windy roads. We noticed the lack of traffic. First impressions are of a lovely, laid back island. Our apartment, Crystal Palace Resort is up a very steep hill from Skala. Our room was very well appointed and spacious, with two balconies, both with sea views. The owners were very welcoming and we had drinks and snack at the poolside bar before heading off to bed.
31/05/19 - Kefalonia - A bit overcast in the morning, so we went for a stroll into Skala. From our apartment there is a bamboo covered walkway down to the seafront. OK going down, but coming back will be more of a challenge! Skala is a pretty little seaside village with lots of bars and restaurants. A quick stop at the supermarket for provisions and then back to the pool to sunbathe and relax. In the evening the apartments held a Greek BBQ night. Lots of fantastic Greek food and dancing around the pool. A great chance to meet our fellow guests. We were certainly worn out after our first night in Kefalonia.
1/6/19 - Kefalonia - Woke up to a lovely sunny morning. We went out to explore Skala again. Found a chilled out beach bar called Ammos for lunch. Then back to the apartment to lie by the pool. In the evening we walked back into Skala for dinner, smashing the 10,000 steps a day here. Found a quaint Taverna called Mi Abeli with a great atmosphere. Still not convinced about Greek wine!
2/6/19 - Kefalonia - Lazy Sunday. Leisurely breakfast at what we have labelled the Sunflower bar, actually called the Mikolatis Family Taverna in Skala, before a day lying on the beach. Couple of beers for Nik and cocktails for me at Ammos Bar, before heading back for a shower. In the evening we had dinner in Ta Pitharia, next to the church, I had a great vegetarian Moussaka.
3/6/19 - Kefalonia - Bit overcast again today, so we stayed by the pool. A day for chilling and reading our kindles. Strolled into Skala for a lovely lunch of wood fired pizza and Greek salad at Pikano. Dinner at The Pines, which as the name suggests overlooks a small pine woodland with views over the Ionian sea.
4/6/19 - Kefalonia - Sightseeing today, after a lazy few days. We booked a cruise to Fiscardo with Captain Vangelis, aboard the Nurviis. Early start as we needed to be all aboard for 9am. First stop was Sami, where Captain Corelli's Mandolin was filmed. We even got to see a turtle swimming in the harbour. We took the optional tour to Melisanni Lake, which is an underground lake, where the roof collapsed in the 1953 earthquake, reputed to have the cleanest water in the world. After entering via some steps, we were rowed around the small lake, it was quite spectacular. Next stop was to swim, but too cold for us! Lunch was in Fiscardo, a lovely traditional fishing village, which is now very smart as it is where all the yachts moor. We had pizza and beer at a charming harbourside bar. Final swim stop was at the famous Myrtos Beach, which is only accessible by boat. We arrived back in Skala around 6pm in time for happy hour cocktails at Ammos Beach bar. Worn out, so sandwich in room before chilling out reading.
5/6/19 - Kefalonia - Penultimate day spent on the beach. Lunch on the beach too. Stopped off at Ammos Beach bar for cocktails for the last time on our walk back to the apartment. Last night in Skala so we headed into town for dinner at Alpha Taverna. Nik had lamb cooked in the oven, which he said was the best he had had in Kefalonia.
6/6/19 - Kefalonia - Birmingham - Last day in Kefalonia. After checking out at 10am, we went for one last stroll into Skala for a coffee. Spent the rest of the day chilling by the pool awaiting our 16.50pm transfer to the airport. Kefalonia airport is tiny, after checking in our bags, we left the airport for a local taverna, being told to return an hour before takeoff to clear security. So we had a very civilised beer and returned when we saw our plane land. Yammas!
