It's been a while since my last blog. A little thing called a global pandemic has curtailed my travels!!

We left home at 10am for a leisurely drive to Devon. We decided to take the A46 to Evesham before joining the M5, which proved to be a good decision as the M5 was predictably very busy. Check in wasn’t until 3pm at our hotel, so we had a drink in The Kings Arms in the nearby village of Tedburn St Mary, the weather was glorious so we sat in the garden enjoying the view of the traditional thatched pub. The Fingle Glen Hotel is part of a golf course set in the rolling Devon countryside. Once we had deposited our bags in our room we sat on the beautifully appointed deck area, which had lovely comfy sofas and gazebos, surrounded by lush planting, with a drink, enjoying the countryside views. We had our evening meal at the hotel too which was simple, wholesome pub grub, beautifully presented. I had scampi and chips and Nik had a bacon cheeseburger and chips. Early night as the next leg of our journey to Cornwall awaits in the morning.

After a continental breakfast, we checked out. First stop the Eden Project which was about 50 miles away. The Eden project is set in a disused quarry, so it was a steep walk down to the biomes. The area is beautifully landscaped and we enjoyed exploring the gardens. We particularly liked the rainforest biome although it was exceptionally hot and humid inside. After a couple of hours exploring, we set off for Mousehole. We stopped off for lunch at Old Quay House in Hayle overlooking the estuary. The whole area was crawling with police as it was close to Carbis Bay where the G7 summit was being held. Several helicopters passed over head as the dignitaries were leaving.
After negotiating the narrow lanes and very limited parking in Mousehole we met John and Liz at the cottage. The cottage was beautifully quaint and Addie the dog was very pleased to see us. After settling in we went a stroll around the village and had a drink on the roof terrace of the Ship Inn. Later we returned to the Ship for dinner. What a fantastic day!

After a trip to Penzance for provisions (and to buy and fit a new toilet seat in the cottage for the owner!), we went to Marazion to visit St Michaels Mount. A bit overcast today, but still lovely and warm. Lunch was a Cornish pasty overlooking the beach and the Mount. Once the tide was out we made our way across the causeway. Dogs are not usually allowed on the Mount so we had to speak to the manager to see if trainee police dog Addie was allowed, it seemed that a kiss from Addie sealed the deal and all the staff were delighted to see her. To enter the castle involved a very steep climb over rough terrain which was not ideal for my ankle, but well worth it for the magnificent views of the bay and castle gardens. Once we negotiated the steep climb down the reward was a cream tea. By now the sun has reappeared so it was a great spot for afternoon refreshments looking back over the bay to Marazion .
Ann joined us for one night (an impressive 7 hour journey, not many people visit Cornwall from the Midlands for such a short trip!). Dinner was at the Godolphin hotel back in Marazion with a beautiful view of the Mount. Food and service was excellent and we would highly recommend Shutters restaurant in the hotel.

A day trip to Land’s End today. We had a brief stop and stroll around St Just, before continuing to Land’s End. The views were fabulous as it was a gloriously sunny day. After coffee and ice cream, Ann left us for her epic drive home. We went to the very picturesque Sennen Cove for lunch beside the sea, a lager was very much deserved after the very steep and rocky walk down the costal path from the car park. Last stop was Cape Cornwall for more spectacular costal views.
Back to the cottage for a rest before dinner at The King’s Arms in Paul which was a short stroll uphill from Mousehole. But Liz and I couldn’t resist a paddle in the sea first, which was very refreshing on such a hot day. Great food, but poor service.

Trip to St Ives via a bus and a train to give trainee PD Addie some more experience of public transport. Quite the adventure, a bus from Mousehole to Penzance, then train to St Erth and another to St Ives. The last leg was very picturesque taking in the estuary at Hayle and Carbis Bay, passing the hotel where G7 was held. St Ives was very busy, a typical English seaside town. We managed to find a quiet spot at a beach cafe for coffee. After walking round the bay we found a small dog friendly beach for Addie to play with some new doggy friends.
As the town was so busy we struggled to find somewhere for lunch, eventually settling for a sandwich at a small cafe on the way back to the station.
Tonight we decided to have a night in and ordered an Indian takeaway. Can highly recommend the New Delhi Palace in Penzance, gorgeous food.

Trip to The Lizard today, the most southerly point in England. Spectacular coastline, we even saw seals. We then went to Kynance Cove just up the coast which was an exceptionally beautiful area. We met another couple from Nuneaton who suggested we visit Cadgwith for lunch. Cadgwith was a very quaint little fishing village with chocolate box thatched cottages. We had a lovely lunch in the courtyard of the Old Cellars by the beach. The pebble beach with fishing boats winched ashore was dog friendly, so Addie had a mad half hour chasing around with the other dogs. On the way back we drove through Porthleven and then had an ice cream on the harbour in Mousehole.
Dinner was at The King’s Arms in Paul again, to celebrate a wonderful holiday with great friends, weather and experiences. Very good food and much improved service this time.

A good time was had by us all, so glad you were able to join us. Great company, great weather and absolutely stunning scenery.
